Three years as an ISACA Mentor: A journey of growth, connection, and learning
Mentorship is a transformative journey. For the past three years, I’ve had the privilege of participating as a Mentor in ISACA’s Global Mentorship Program.
The experience has been nothing short of inspiring. Working with talented and driven mentees, I’ve shared insights from my 25 years in the field and discovered new perspectives and approaches that have enriched my professional life.
Here are some highlights from my journey:
A. Insights
The mentorship process is truly a two-way street. While mentees seek guidance on navigating challenges, building skills, or setting career goals, mentors often find their perspectives broadened. I’ve learned that:
- Every career stage brings valuable perspectives. Listening to my mentees helped me understand the profession’s evolving challenges.
- Fresh ideas spark creativity. Mentees often approached problems with innovative ideas, reigniting my passion for learning and problem-solving.
B. Challenges
Like any worthwhile endeavour, mentorship comes with challenges:
- Tailoring advice. Each mentee has unique goals and aspirations, requiring a personalised approach.
- Balancing schedules. Finding time for meaningful conversations amidst busy professional lives can be tough but is always rewarding.
- Navigating virtual connections. Building rapport in a remote environment takes effort but can lead to deep, impactful relationships.
C. Tips for New Mentors
To new mentors joining ISACA’s program, here’s my advice:
- Listen more than you speak. Understanding your mentee’s goals is key to providing relevant guidance.
- Ask thoughtful questions. Help your mentees reflect and find their solutions rather than simply offering answers.
- Be consistent. Regular check-ins, even short ones, build trust and show commitment.
- Share real stories. Personal anecdotes can make lessons relatable and memorable.
D. Lessons Learned
Perhaps the greatest lesson I’ve learned is that mentorship is a partnership of mutual growth. While I offered my mentees advice on career strategies, leadership, and overcoming challenges, they gifted me fresh perspectives, renewed enthusiasm, and the joy of making a meaningful connection.
Why Mentorship Matters
Join the Journey
If you’re an ISACA member, I encourage you to explore this incredible opportunity. Mentorship isn’t just about giving back—it’s about moving forward together.
…and one more thing!
Mentorship has been one of the most rewarding parts of my professional journey. Every conversation with a mentee leaves me feeling energised and inspired.
I’m grateful for the chance to grow alongside such talented individuals and look forward to many more years of learning together.
